pMDIs have been used for the treatment of asthma for over 50 years. Interestingly, however, there is still a lot we do not understand about the formation of the particle droplets that are expelled from the device at high velocity. The Respiratory Technology group is undertaking a series of projects focusing on the dynamic process of aerosol generation and particle formation.
Projects include high speed holographic imaging, dynamic electrostatic charge measurement and the study of particle morphology after the particles evaporate and deposit in the lung. By understanding the fundamental mechanisms of particle formation we can investigate how particle properties influence lung deposition and uptake.
