Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is common in intensive care unit (ICU) scenarios. It has been estimated that up to a quarter of patients on mechanical ventilation may end up with pneumonia. As a result, there is a high risk of mortality from infection in patients, who are admitted for other life threatening illnesses. To reduce the risk of VAP in ICU patients, the Respiratory Technology Team is actively developing and researching new polymers and nano-particle systems that can be incorporated into conventional intubation tubes, that are capable of reducing bacterial adhesion and growth.
